    The Royal Meteorological Institute (RMI) is a reference in Belgium. Everyone knows RMI for its weather
    forecasts but the Institute is also active in many more fields. RMI is the national centre for data and knowledge
    on weather and climate. As federal institute of knowledge on weather and climate, RMI devotes its energy to its
    tasks of public service. These tasks consist of establishing general weather forecasts and diffusing warnings in
    case of dangerous weather phenomenon, watching the climate, collecting, controlling and archiving
    meteorological and geophysical data, managing the infrastructure needed for these activities, developing
    numerical models and realizing scientific research. RMI is active 24 hours a day and combines infrastructure,
    technology, sciences and public service. The products and services of RMI meet high quality standards.


    The Operational Directorate “Weather forecasting and climatological information” of RMI invites applications
    for an assistant scientist position in its climatology group. The researcher will contribute to the success of the
    interdisciplinary BRAIN-be SPIDER pioneer research project funded by the Belgian Science Policy. The project
    aims at using the energy production registered at residential photovoltaic (PV) systems as solar irradiation
    sensors. This innovative approach will require (1) to derive solar irradiation from the energy production of PV
    system and (2) to transpose solar irradiance on a tilted plan to that on the horizontal plane. The project will be
    conducted in close collaboration with the Instituto de Energía Solar of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid,
    Spain. The position is for 2 years and the salary will be fixed in accordance with the official Belgian public
    employee pay scale based on the diploma and the length of service recognized in a similar function.


    Qualification s and requirements for the position:
    – University degree (Master or PhD) in civil engineering or physics.
    – Knowledge in atmospheric radiative transfer
    – Experience in numerical modeling
    – Excellent programming skills in C (Fortran and R) as well as familiar with Unix/Linux environment.
    – Strong interest in renewable energy
    – Ability to write scientific and technical reports
    – Fluency in English (spoken and written). Knowledge of French and/or Dutch is required.
    – Willingness to work in an international framework, and to attend project/international meetings
